Got a New Computer? Here’s How to Move Everything Over (Without Losing Anything)
Getting a new computer is exciting — until you realize you have to move everything from your old one. Photos, documents, bookmarks, emails, software, passwords, settings. It can feel overwhelming, and if you miss something important it can be a real problem.
At Local Computer Repair in Waterville, one of the most common things we help with is new computer setup and data migration. People get a new laptop, realize it’s more complicated than they expected, and bring both machines to us. We handle the whole thing.
Here’s what the process looks like — and what to watch out for.
What Exactly Is Data Migration?
Data migration is the process of moving your files, settings, and software from one computer to another. It sounds simple, but there’s more to it than just copying files to a USB drive.
A proper migration includes:
- All your personal files — documents, photos, videos, music, downloads
- Email accounts and local email archives
- Browser bookmarks and saved passwords
- Installed software and applications
- Printers, peripherals, and their drivers
- Desktop background, folder structure, and personal preferences
- Outlook PST files and calendar data if applicable
- Any specialty software you use for work or hobbies
Why Not Just Do It Yourself?
You absolutely can, especially if you’re comfortable with technology. But here’s where people commonly run into trouble:
Missing hidden files and folders. Many important files — like Outlook data, browser profiles, and application settings — are stored in hidden folders that most people don’t know to look for.
Software licensing issues. Some software is tied to your old computer’s hardware. Moving to a new machine requires deactivating the license on the old one first. If you don’t do this, you may find the software won’t activate on the new machine.
Missing drivers. Printers, scanners, and specialty hardware often need drivers that don’t automatically transfer. Your printer that worked perfectly before may need to be set up from scratch.
Forgetting things. It’s easy to think you’ve gotten everything and then realize three weeks later that an important folder didn’t make it over.
PC to PC, Mac to Mac, or Switching Between Them?
The complexity of a migration depends partly on whether you’re staying on the same platform or switching.
PC to PC is usually the most straightforward. Windows has built-in tools and there are professional migration tools we use that handle most of the heavy lifting.
Mac to Mac is also relatively smooth thanks to Apple’s Migration Assistant, which does a thorough job when used correctly.
PC to Mac or Mac to PC is more involved. Files transfer fine, but software doesn’t — Windows programs don’t run on Mac and vice versa. You’ll need to find Mac or Windows equivalents for your software and re-set up everything from scratch. We can walk you through what that looks like for your specific situation.
What Should You Do With the Old Computer?
Once everything is confirmed to be on the new machine, you have a few options for the old one:
- Keep it as a backup machine. A wiped old laptop can make a great secondary device for travel or for the kids.
- Donate it. We can wipe it securely so your personal data is gone before you give it away.
- Recycle it. Maine has electronics recycling programs. We can point you in the right direction.
- Sell it. A properly wiped and refurbished laptop can still have value. We can help with this too.
Important: Never donate or sell a computer without wiping it first. Simply deleting files or doing a factory reset is often not enough to fully remove personal data. We perform secure wipes that meet data destruction standards.
How Long Does Data Migration Take?
A typical migration takes one to two business days depending on how much data you have, how many applications need to be set up, and whether any complications come up. Large photo or video libraries take longer to transfer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline when you bring the machines in.
How Much Does It Cost?
Data migration pricing depends on the complexity of the job. We’ll assess both machines and give you a clear quote upfront. There are no surprises.
For most residential customers moving from one Windows laptop to another, it’s a straightforward job at a reasonable flat rate. We’ll let you know exactly what to expect before we start.
